THE TALES OF TWO FATHERS - July 2010

TEXT: I SAM.16.1, 11-13; GEN.25.21-23.

INTRODUCTION: There are all of similarities in the lives of both Jacob and David. The most striking is their love and passion for God and their children. It is important for us to note that fatherhood is not just about how many children you have or will have but it is tied up in this scripture

Gen.17: 5 & 6 “For I have made you a father of many nations, I will make nations of you and kings will come from you”.

God did not make a man first he made a male, the difference between a man and a male is in positioning and responsibilities. A male grows into a man. Fathers are made for positional reasons for their generations.

JACOB AND DAVID:

1. They passionately love the Lord and their families.

2. They were both positioned by God at pivotal places for the generations after them.

3. They were both established by and in a covenant.

4. They both grew up outside their natural environment and faced immerse adversities from the people they served.

5. They took places of people that were rejected by God.

6. They were both Shepherds.

7. They were businessman with supernatural skills.

8. Both have love child.

THE TALE OF DAVID – I Sam.17

1. Built the kingdom not his family. II Sam.5.1-2 “All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, "We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the LORD said to you, 'You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler'; 8.

2. He fought wars for his country not his children. II Sam.8; 12.10 “Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.

3. Failed woefully as a father but was a great king. Amnon and Tamar II Sam13, Absalom etc.

THE TALE OF JACOB

1. He built his home after he discovered he cannot love one child above the other. Gen.37.3 “Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented [a] robe for him”.

2. He fought for his family. Gen.32.28 “Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, [a] because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome".

3. HE BLESSED HIS CHILDREN AND PROPHECIED CONCERNING THEIR TOMORROW. Gen.49.1 “Then Jacob called for his sons and said: "Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come”.

“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God” (I Jn. 5:4 & 5)
